The following eggs came from a recent estate sale where the family was assigned to Europe in the 1950s. The colors are still bright; no cracks. They are in wonderful condition for their age. They are real egg shells and a few have string for hanging. These are an amazing example of the detailed art of Czech egg painting! There is an interesting history behind these eggs and the Easter tradition, called Velikonoce, in the Czech Republic, and former Czechoslovakia. Kraslice is the Czech word for Easter Egg. Girls decorated these eggs and give them to boys on Easter. The art of painting these eggs is tedious and requires lengthy dedication, depending on the detail it could take several hours! Many techniques are used to achieve the endless designs, such as the batik dye method, encasing in knotted wire, brushing with wax and scratching the surface to create designs, and more.

These hand-decorated Easter Eggs called “Kraslice” are the symbol of Easter in the Czech Republic. Based on a very old tradition, these eggs are decorated by women prior Easter to be given to men on Easter Day. They make a stunning center piece for your Easter table or they can be attached to strings and hang from willow branches as a decoration. They also make a very unique Easter gift or can simply be displayed as a piece of art throughout the year.
There are many different decorating techniques and each egg may take anywhere between thirty minutes to six hours to make. Materials such as bee’s wax, dye, straw, onion peels, and watercolors are used along with etching, waxing, batik and pasting techniques. One of the methods used is applying dye in different stages and then removing the dye by scratching the surface of an egg with an amazing precision to create the beautiful designs. This tradition is passed on from generation to generation and each egg is a very unique work of art.
